Specialising in vintage furniture and accessories, 37 Old London Road has just opened in Kingston thanks to the help of TV retail guru Mary Portas. JANET DONIN takes us on a trip down memory lane

Name of store: 37 Old London Road
Address: 37 Old London Road, Kingston KT2 6ND
Tel: 0208 541 4774

Background
Just as Denny and Dazzle Richardson were planning to relocate their furniture shop from the iconic road of the fallen telephone boxes in Kingston to Camden, the call came from Mary Portas Mary Queen of Shops to see if theyd like to participate in a shop makeover for her TV programme.

As there are so many furniture shops in the road, Mary suggested we concentrate on vintage furniture and accessories, says Denny. We loved the idea.

During the filming, the couple were taken on a voyage of discovery by Mary and even met Jo Wood (ex-wife of Ronnie) for whom they sourced some vintage wallpaper.

Style
Helped by members of the shows production team, the shop was transformed. Now, from the brilliant lime green door to the quirky shelves made from halved coffee tables or small suitcases and the interesting divider of silver birch tree trunks, the shop is bursting with fabulous retro furniture that has been up-cycled by Denny and Dazzle. Its also a showcase for many young and new designers of cushions, murals, china and prints.

Shop for
Unique pieces of found furniture that Dazzle strips of the old varnish and oils if the wood is good, or Denny hand paints and distresses to give it an interesting new look. Or, for something a little different, there is the 1950s table, telephone and chair covered in newsprint and dotted with scarab beetle images.

New in store is a 1960s G Plan bedroom suite with its original factory painted, floral design and dining chairs covered in original art deco patterned velvet.

I also liked the vintage style cushions that have been digitally printed with retro images and the quirky pebble door-stops covered with printed velvet.

If retro is not your thing, take a look at the jazzy steel doormats and the bling pet bowls.

A sourcing service is also available if youre looking for specific vintage items for your home.

Favourite product
Their amazing wallpaper in brilliant lime green, yellow or eau de nil with retro organic patterns it would look great as a feature wall.

Worth a visit
because at last Islington has come to Kingston, as Mary Portas says.
