As cosy Autumn firesides beckon, thoughts turn to convivial indoor gatherings and seasonal gifts. Garry Milner explains the inspiration behind his Ashtead whisky emporium and bar, Liquid Gold

What is behind your determination to provide the best place to taste whisky in Surrey?

I’m a great believer in the local high street and I wanted to bring something different to Ashtead. A place for people to meet, learn, sample and select from a fine range of whiskies to suit all budgets and tastes. It has been an absolute pleasure to bring the best people in the trade on board to advise and inspire our customers. I love meeting enthusiasts new and old at our tasting evenings and absorbing knowledge at our masterclass events, which explore and open up the world of whisky.

How can customers buy rare, valuable and exotic whiskeys from around the world?

In addition to the physical shop, I wanted people to be able to choose from our carefully selected products, wherever they live. So customers can buy online, they can pop into the shop or they can become a member of our Liquid Gold Members Club and experience our tasting evenings and become involved in investing in whisky, via the Investors Club if the fancy takes them. The shop contains a wonderful array of fine whiskies, gins and whisky-related gifts. Ashtead is conveniently well connected, benefiting from a London mainline railway station and being close to the M25.

Explain the Liquid Gold Members Clubs…

We have a bar stocked with over 65 whiskies and 25 gins where Liquid Gold members and their guests come for enjoyable evenings with the opportunity to taste a tipple before buying the bottle. Our award-winning mixologist creates fantastic whisky or gin cocktails, bringing new and exciting drink concepts to our members. Members also get access to updates, new products and insights into new releases and trends plus events and special tastings held instore and at other prestigious venues throughout Surrey and London. There are three levels of membership, each offering valuable benefits and access to the bar in opening hours.

And the Investor’s Club?

People who enjoy good whisky have become increasingly keen to invest in it, having recognised it as a good way to diversify assets whilst building a store of their favourites. We source rare, collectable, limited edition and first release whiskys in casks and bottles from desirable and silent distilleries. We are happy to meet interested people over a glass or two, to discuss options. It is our aim to explore with customers, the best investments in whisky.

It sounds like that difficult-to-buy-for relative, friend or colleague could be pleased with a gift of membership or other whisky related goodies from Liquid Gold?

Yes, absolutely. Customers have sourced that perfect leaving present, stag or hen night gift, anniversary present etc from Liquid Gold with great success. We also run private tasting events for groups which can provide a lovely informal gathering for a special occasion in Surrey. We stock unique glassware for serving whisky and gin, to suit all styles and budgets. Of course, we stock a huge range of whisky and gin and can source others.
