High up in the Surrey Hills in the beautiful village of Coldharbour, The Plough Inn has introduced a weekly initiative to showcase the wealth of produce available on their doorstep.

Taking place every Tuesday, Love Local is a chance to enjoy a menu made entirely from local Surrey produce.

“We wanted to support local growers and farmers by using what is seasonal to create an entire menu, not just the odd item here and there,” says landlady Becky Hopper.

“As winter comes, I know the menu will become more of a challenge, but the idea is really to show customers that it is possible to eat local food all year round with a little effort.”

The Plough’s first Love Local menu this week featured caramelised Dorking fig and Mickleham Norbury Blue tart on a bed of pub-grown wilted rainbow chard; roasted loin of pork, stuffed with blackberry and sage stuffing, mustard mashed potato, sautéed curly kale from Becky’s garden and apple and ginger sauce from the chef’s garden; and a Victoria Plum Tarte Tatin using ‘Pam’s Plums’ (from one of the village gardens).

Becky and her team have been ably assisted by Tim McEntire from Dorking’s Food Float (who are incidentally up for the Services to the Community award at the Surrey Life Food & Drink Awards 2017).

“Tim has been really supportive of what we’re trying to do and will help us to source our vegetables every week, when my garden runs out,” says Becky. “Next week we’re planning on featuring Wotton Estate venison and ceps foraged from the hill.”

Taking place every Tuesday, the Love Local menus are priced at £20.95 for two courses and £25.95 for three courses, with 20% off local wines, beers and spirits to encourage customers to give it a go.

While you’re there, make sure to try a pint from their own Leith Hill Brewery, which is found in the pub garden or buy a few extra Surrey foodie goodies from their attached village shop. What more excuse to explore into the Surrey Hills?
