As with British pubs and restaurants, the humble BBQ has been taken to increasingly adventurous levels in this country in recent decades, as influences from around the world have moved things away from burnt bangers and limp salads towards more intricate preparations.

The Big Meat is the natural progression from this obsession: a Bank Holiday Weekend celebration of, as they have it, ‘grilling and chilling’.

From the low and slow cooking of the American deep south, through to Argentinian asado, Caribbean jerk and the humble British banger, this BBQ and music festival heads to the Rural Life Centre in Tilford on Saturday August 27 and Sunday August 28.

“Barbecue is so popular now, it seems to be everywhere at the moment,” says James Lowe, The Big Meat co-organiser.

“The festival shows you what authentic barbecue is, not the mass produced shop bought stuff that’s going around.”

There will be demonstrations on both days from Simon Dyer, winner of ITV’s BBQ Champ, and from the reigning Grillstock champion, Priscilla Queen of the Firepit.

One of the highlights of this year’s event is an IBQN (International Barbecue Network) sanctioned barbecue competition, with over twenty teams cooking over the weekend in five different categories.

Live music over the weekend includes funk sensations, Redtenbacher’s Funkestra, cajun and zydeco group The Pistol Shrimps, blues from The Nat Martin Band, country from South of the City and Seasick Steve tribute, Sicknote Steve.

Wash it down with award-winning ales from Frensham Brewery, cold craft lager or wine courtesy of Gout de France. If you’re feeling adventurous then you can also grab some South Carolinian moonshine from Shine London or nitrogen infused cold brew coffee from Frank and Earnest.

The coals are fired, the bands are warming up, the beers are cooling, now fingers crossed there’s some of that rare British summer sunshine we occasionally get blessed with...
