Lovers of Indian cuisine will no doubt be familiar with the Surrey Curry Club, an organisation established in 2004 to recognise and promote Indian restaurants that prepare their food within legal guidelines using minimum additives and colouring. Part of the scheme was also to educate the public not to expect curries to all be bright red!

Well, Fetcham Tandoori is where it all started, and five years on they are still a flagship of their genre, having recently won a prestigious silver Eat Out Eat Well award from Surrey County Council.

Owner Jehangir Haque was there to greet us himself as we arrived on a cold, dark winter evening, looking forward to the prospect of a nice hot curry.

As we settled down in our seats, we took in our surroundings. The decor is classic Indian restaurant in style and refreshingly spacious, enhanced by the effect of having mirrors on both walls to give an impression of never-endingness!

Our first reaction to the menu, which we perused while munching popadoms, was to be grateful for the Which is What section: an index of the more common dish names and a brief definition of each extremely useful. The menu is comprehensive and very well laid out, and bearing in mind this is Fetcham Tandoori, working out what their specialities are was a no-brainer.

Fresh simple ingredients
For me, there was only one choice the Fetcham Tandoori Special, comprising tender chicken breast with green pepper served sizzling. A few bites were enough to appreciate what theyre all about here; very fresh ingredients, not overly spicy hot, with natural flavours being allowed to shine through. Simplicity in other words. I chose plain pilau rice as an accompaniment, plus a cauliflower bhaji, all washed down with a Cobra beer. I enjoyed every mouthful.

Meanwhile, my daughter Helen settled on the King Prawn Kashmir, a mild curry with banana, which she matched with mushroom rice and a stuffed paratha, and our special guest, Darren, chose a Chicken Passanda. This was a chicken tikka cooked with almond powder, coconut powder and served in a sauce containing red wine that was deliciously creamy. As a side order, he opted for pilau rice and a keema nan.

But this was really only half the story. Jehangir also had several special taster dishes prepared for us by chef Juber Ahmed, not all of which appear on the main menu. However, mention must be made of the tandoori chicken selection, served simply with coriander, this being effectively their signature dish and one that was also submitted to the Eat Out Well Award team. These were quite an eye-opener for Helen, who really doesnt enjoy spicy hot food and tends to stick to mild dishes such as korma. But here were equally mild options that she didnt expect to enjoy but devoured with relish, as indeed we all did.

Needless to say, we came away feeling very full indeed. The quality of the food was complemented by equally fine service and a warm, relaxing environment. All in all a great evening out, especially for the more discerning curry fans. And hot news! Theyve just introduced a Sunday Buffet option 7.95 eat as much as you like. Shouldnt be too difficult!
