Surrey is well endowed with country pubs – here’s our pick of those to cosy up in after a winter walk or for a special Valentine’s evening to remember

1. The Dog & Pheasant, Brook

This traditional Surrey pub has it all – a roaring fire, a great selection of beers, wines and gins, ceiling beams and timbers, fabulous food and a great location close to the quaint town of Haslemere and the stunning Devil’s Punch Bowl. It has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence for consistently high reviews by Trip Advisor and is as suited to cosy winters as it is to warm idyllic summers. Be ready for some serious winding down, especially if you manage to grab the coveted table by the fire.

2. The Surrey Oaks, Newdigate

If local real ales, craft beers, ciders and a truly rustic environment are your thing, then The Surrey Oaks is just for you. This CAMRA award-winning gem, situated near Newdigate, in the heart of the Surrey countryside, has been around since 1850 with parts of the building dating back to 1570. With oak beams and candlelit nooks, you can enjoy your tipple in the glow of the fireplace and likely end up unable to resist the offerings on the tempting menu, where game suet pudding sits alongside a Surrey Oaks paella or a stone-baked pizza.

3. The Cricketers, Downside

In the summer this cracking country pub is the place to go and sit outside while watching cricket on the common but in the winter there are fireplaces, inglenooks and comfy armchairs to tempt you in from the cold where you can relax with a glass of wine or a guest beer. If you are hungry there is the brasserie, which features lots of exciting dishes to tantalise your taste buds or a range of very reasonable bar meals including Mrs Keen’s gammon steak, fried duck egg and chips – delicious! The stylish Cricketers blends classic with contemporary while embracing the rustic charm of the building. It is well placed for the local attractions, such as Painshill Park and the small town of Cobham.

4. The Running Horses, Mickleham

Believed to have been built in the 16th century, this impressive previous coaching inn and post house sits in the village of Mickleham, near Dorking, and is well known locally as a great place to eat. It has bags of rustic charm with quirky features, fireplaces and a real olde worlde feel. The menu is full of British delights like roasted Gressingham duck breast and salmon and herb fishcake at very reasonable prices and there are cosy corners ideal for Valentine’s Day diners. In fact the Running Horses makes an ideal romantic getaway also offering accommodation – some rooms featuring roll top baths and luxury rain showers. With Box Hill, the Stepping Stones and Denbies Vineyard all close by, there are plenty of walks and things to do in this beautiful part of the county.

5. The Cock Inn, Headley

Winner of the 2017 Surrey Life Food and Drink Awards Best Pub category, the Cock Inn is another example of modern meeting rustic with contemporary furniture and original features. The welcoming brick fireplace is the feature of the bar area and this pub and dining venue is the hub of the local community, running networking events, and serving as a meeting place for people from all over the area. The head chef happily shares some of his culinary secrets on the pub’s blog to reach new foodie fans and if a G&T is your drink of choice then every Wednesday is #ginwednesday. A great place to while away a few hours with friends or that special someone.

6. Three Horseshoes, Thursley

Rather spend a wintery Sunday walking around film sets than sitting on the couch watching films? Then after visiting Hankley Common (Skyfall), Frensham Little Pond (The Huntsman) and Bourne Woods (War Horse, Transformers etc) wrap up your day with an evening at the Three Horseshoes, where you can replace those lost calories with some great food and a pint of Hogs Back ale or a glass of Silent Pool gin. A popular locals’ pub, it also warmly welcomes walkers, tourists and cyclists and offers stunning views if you manage to finish your walk before the sun goes down. Damon Hill has been known to drop in and, being central to some big movie locations, you never know who you may spot!

7. The Bluebell, Dockenfield

This award-winning, delightful family run pub sits just within the Surrey border in the hamlet of Batts Corner, near Dockenfield, and boasts freshly prepared food, local produce and a friendly service as well as a great ales and gin selection. The Bluebell is ideal for families as is kid and dog friendly and ideal for a cosy winter drink, especially if you can grab the far end of the bar which features an impressive brick fireplace. The food is excellent and typically English and the Dockenfield burger is well worth a try.

8. The White Horse, Shere

The ultimate Surrey pub for lovers of romantic movies must surely be the White Horse. Scenes from classics like The Holiday, which featured the pub, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and Four Weddings and a Funeral were shot in the village and so this 15th century gem cannot be excluded from such a list of cosy hostelries. Indeed, the pub’s history is worthy of a film script; it was rumoured to be a smuggler’s pub and authentic timers from Nelson’s Victory are thought to be part of the pub. With nooks and crannies for romantic dining and a special winter festival menu, The White Horse is the place to escape the hum drum of the post-Christmas season and enjoy that romantic interlude – just like Cameron and Jude did!

10. The White Bear, Fickleshole

With three open fireplaces you have a good chance of a warm and cosy spot in what is described as a good old fashioned pub! Highly rated the White Bear is also known for its succulent fillet and sirloin steaks served on hot skillets and popular Sunday roasts, in fact the whole menu is pretty mouthwatering!
