"We are a small, very traditional cake company so our Christmas cake is traditional, too," says Old Cart Lodge owner Paul Medland (right). "It's made with butter and soaked with brandy and we ice just the top."
As well as Christmas cakes, the company, based on a farm on the North Downs, offers a year-round selection of sponges, loaf cakes and cup cakes.
For those not keen on traditional Christmas cake but still wanting something festive, Paul suggests his award-winning parsnip and caraway loaf cake; a Tunis cake - which is similar to a Madeira with chocolate and marzipan fruits on top; or a mincemeat loaf cake - a "moist, sticky cake" topped with mixed nuts and Demerara sugar. For something completely different, Old Cart Lodge even makes a chocolate and courgette cake.
Following an autumn rush, November trade shows and the added handful of a baby boy under six months, Paul's looking forward to a well-earned break over Christmas.
"We're quite a big family so we'll be at one of the three houses on our farm with the grandparents and our new baby this year."
TOP TIP: Cakes are best stored in a container in the fridge, but they also freeze well - freeze in slices if you want a little at a time.
