Norbury Blue cheese, Mickleham - Surrey's local producers

In December, Surrey Life set out to discover whether it was possible to put together a Christmas lunch using only Surrey produce. The answer was a resounding 'yes' and fortunately all of the producers run year long operations.

The farm produces its own un-pasteurised, vegetarian blue cheese, Norbury Blue, and the new Dirty Vicar. They supply restaurants and shops including Garsons farm shop in Esher and Denbies in Dorking.
"It's a busy time because everyone goes mad with blue cheese at Christmas!" says Norbury Blue founder Michaela Edge.
Aided by her partner Neil Allam, the pair have also introduced a new offering this year, Dirty Vicar, a white moulded cheese she describes as "like a camembert on the outside and a crumbly Caerphilly on the inside".
As well as serving their cheeses in the classic way, after dinner with biscuits, Michaela suggests using them in tarts or salads with caramelised onions. "Our Norbury Blue is also great melted into a nice watercress soup as a starter," she adds.
The Jolly Farmers deli-pub and restaurant in Betchworth even has a Dirty Vicar mousse on its Christmas menu this year!
Norbury Blue is based on Michaela's family's dairy farm where work doesn't stop for the festive period.
"On Christmas day, everyone goes and helps out with the routine - milking the cows and so on - so mum and dad can get finished, too!" she says.
TOP TIP: Take cheese out of the fridge to stand at room temperature for a couple of hours before serving.
