The award-winning Jolly Farmers Pub, Eatery and Farm Shop is recognised as the UK’s first deli-pub. Located in picturesque Buckland between Reigate and Dorking, this family-run establishment takes the term ‘serving local food’ to another level.
Voted ‘Pub of the Year’ and ‘Best Menu of the Year’ in the 2013 Surrey Life Awards, The Jolly Farmers is also a 2014 finalist for “Best Local Menu” and “Best Family Dining”.
Paula and Jon Briscoe, who own The Jolly Farmers and its sister pub The Fox Revived at Norwood Hill, have long supported smaller local suppliers and championed seasonal foods, sourcing from more than 30 local suppliers.
“Working together and supporting one another brings opportunity and prosperity felt through the whole community and has never been so important than in today’s economic climate” says Jon.
Proving that money can indeed grow on trees, Jon and Paul run a successful Cash4Crops scheme, which encourages locals to weigh in their excess home-grown or foraged fruit and vegetables and swap them for dining vouchers for either of the pubs.
As well as the unique offering of the farm shop located right there in the pub, there is a traditional bar area, a comfy sofa zone and a newly-refurbished restaurant with an open log fire. Not to mention the new extension area overlooking the outdoor terrace and children’s play area.
The Jolly Farmers is one of the founder members of Surrey-based LocalFoodBritain.com and it’s easy to see why. The menu champions local food and is a mix of traditional bistro favourites including pie and mash, burgers and steaks (from Roberts and Edwards Butchers, Reigate) as well as a good selection of fish (from Ashtead Fisheries) and vegetarian choices. For something different, weekend specials include whole lobster and chateaubriand platters. All food is freshly prepared which means that intolerances and allergies are easily catered for. The children’s menu ensures youngsters will eat well – no chicken nuggets or dried-up pizzas to be seen!
The bar offers ales from local micro breweries including Surrey Hills Brewery and Pilgrim Brewery as well as local wines and home-made cordials.
The farm shop
The farm shop stocks a superb range of local produce including bread from Chalk Hills Bakers, cheese, local eggs, smoked fish and meat (some smoked at sister pub The Fox Revived’s own smokery), cakes, bottled beer, chutneys and Jon and Paula’s own range of Briscoes jellies.
A popular meeting place for mums (and dads!), The Jolly Farmers not only offers a children’s play area and comfy sofa for a cosy coffee meet up, but also a 2for1 deal on hot drinks on a Monday. The superb range of coffee is supplied by Coffee Real.
Open for breakfast
Open daily for breakfast and serving food right throughout the day, it’s a great place for business meetings (free wifi available) or just a simple catch up with friends.
Parties and functions
Work parties, funerals, and business launches for up to 80 people are happily catered for.
Pedals, paws and boots
The proximity to Box Hill and the Olympic cycling route make The Jolly Farmers a popular pitstop for cyclists and walkers alike (well-behaved dogs and clean boots are welcome).
The pub is very easy to find, located just five minutes from the M25, 15 minutes from Gatwick Airport and 20 minutes from the M23.
So, whether you are popping in for a coffee, taking the family out for a traditional Sunday roast, or celebrating a special occasion – The Jolly Farmers is at the very heart of the local community. Go soon!
