GUILDFORD Farmers Market, above, which features over 50 local farmers and producers, is celebrating its tenth anniversary this month.
And, to mark this milestone, plans are afoot to get as many of the markets original producers along on the day as possible, as well as those who have been there all along.
I think Guildford Farmers Market is particularly special because it brings real local food back to the centre of a historic market town that has long since lost most of its traditional food outlets, says Guildford Farmers Market co-ordinator, Sue Webber. The setting, in the historic cobbled High Street, certainly adds to the ambience on the day.
Regulars at the market include John and Georgina Emerson of Hunts Hill Farm, Normandy Common; Angus Stovold of Lydling Farm, Shackleford; Charles Secrett of Hurst Farm, Milford; and the ladies of the Guildford Country Market group.
I believe farmers markets are more important than ever for a number of reasons, adds Sue. They provide the chance to buy fresh, high quality local food direct from those who produce it, thus improving the range on offer, keeping more money in the local economy and reducing food miles.
They also provide a vital trading outlet for our farmers in an area where economic pressures on the rural business sector are tremendous.

PS... Its been an exciting start to 2010 for Surreys local producers with Milford Farmers Market and Garsons Farm in Esher both scooping top honours at the 2010 FARMA Awards, and Ripley picking up a second place.
