As host of our Food & Drink Awards for the past three years, Foxhills in Ottershaw has become an integral part of the Surrey Life team. Louise Johncox pays a visit to try out their afternoon tea

Foxhills has welcomed guests for 40 years and remains a family-owned resort open to members and visitors. With three golf courses, an award-winning health spa and the two AA Rosette-awarded Manor Restaurant, it’s a real Surrey delight – and afternoon tea there is more popular now than ever. “It seems the appetite for afternoon tea continues to grow and our guests revel in the tradition,” says Sebastian Musiolik, restaurant manager.
The 19th century Manor House at the heart of Foxhills is the perfect venue for a special occasion. Set in 400 acres, the first glimpse I had of this beautiful building was through a gap in the trees as I entered the drive. Our afternoon tea was served in the Manor Lounge, which had comfortable sofas and armchairs with a classic fireplace. There were six tables in our section of the room and the most wonderful view of the gardens. Afternoon Tea is also served in other sections of the house.

My sister, Georgina, and I opted for the classic Afternoon Tea (£19.95 per person). We enjoyed a selection of finger sandwiches: egg mayonnaise, cucumber, cream cheese and oak-smoked salmon. We then indulged in a warm fruit scone, each served with jam and clotted cream. The soft scones were fresh out of the oven. The cakes on the top tier included white chocolate pistachio delice, chocolate and peanut ganache, petite banoffee pies and mango macaroons. The Manor Restaurant’s executive chef Alan O’Kane and his team prepare all the pastries and afternoon tea delights each day. My favourite was the white chocolate pistachio delice, as it was original, sweet and delicate. We couldn’t manage all of the cakes, so we were offered a goody box to take the leftovers home – a great idea. Nothing like a mango macaroon after the journey home to keep the memory alive!
The Manor Restaurant, holder of two AA Rosettes for culinary excellence, is open to members, hotel guests and visitors. In December, it’s a cosy spot for lunch or dinner and, throughout the month, diners can enjoy a special festive take on the regular three-course Market Menu, served with coffee and mince pies, at £36.95 for lunch and £42.95 for dinner.
Set in the gorgeous Manor Lounge, the Afternoon Tea at Foxhills is pure luxury.
There is plenty of parking at Foxhills, close to The Manor House. Members have their own car park to the right as you reach the top of the drive; visitors should use the guest car park to the left as you reach the top of the drive.
