The lowdown…

Found at Ewell Court Garden Nursery, and set near a picturesque park and lake, Ewell Court Tea Rooms is a joy to discover.

Managed by Karen Stiles, the tea rooms celebrated a five-year anniversary last July, while the pretty, well-stocked nursery has been run by Tim Harland for about 20 years.

I drove there and was surprised to find such a delightful country-style tea room hidden just off a residential road.

The nearby Grade II listed Ewell Court House was damaged in a fire last December so is currently closed, but the pretty park and children’s playground just around the corner are worth exploring.

Best table…

Choose from the converted greenhouse, on the terrace or in ‘the stables’.

I took my son, Joe, aged 13, who chose a table inside, near to the big board that caught his eye, which was advertising specials including hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows.

The wicker chairs were comfortable and our table was decorated with a pretty floral pink tablecloth and small plant.
The décor is what is commonly referred to these days as ‘shabby chic’ with garden utensils on the walls and a mix of gifts for sale.

Within a few minutes, Joe was off exploring the nursery, checking out the plants and flowers. The customers included ladies who lunch, couples and young families.

This is definitely the place to go for a traditional selection of cakes at reasonable prices, with the range including: lemon drizzle (£1.50), coffee and walnut (£1.50), orange (£1.50), carrot (£1.50), Eccles (£1.30) and scone, jam and clotted cream (£2.50).

According to Karen, the top three choices are the lemon drizzle, carrot and scones, but I decided on the orange cake topped with icing and enjoyed the delicate orangey flavour.

Tea is £1.40 while a cappuccino or latte is £2.00. Not surprisingly, Joe chose the hot chocolate with whipped cream (£3.00).

On the menu…

As we visited at lunchtime, we also checked out the menu for savoury dishes.

There was a classic selection of sandwiches, paninis, baguettes and jacket potatoes, all served with crisps, salad and coleslaw. Joe ordered a cheese and ham panini (£5.25), which was a generous sized portion. We were impressed with the quantity and quality and it took two of us to finish it.

Other diners were tucking into sandwiches and jacket potatoes. Apparently, Brie, bacon and cranberry panini (£5.95) is a popular choice.

The lunch was an unexpected hit plus the traditional selection of cakes ensures that everyone is happy. We also bought a bag of duck food (priced at just 25p) at the tea room and ended the afternoon feeding ducks and exploring the park.

Top tip:

Ewell Court Tea Rooms doesn’t accept credit cards – only cash or cheques. Also, back at the nursery next door, Tim Harland specialises in wicker baskets, so there’s a good selection, and he also refills empty baskets too.

Louise Johncox’s parents, Peter and Frankie, ran Peter’s tea shop in Weybridge from 1958 until 2000 when they retired. Louise has written a book about her parents’ tea shop, The Baker’s Daughter, which is out now in all good bookshops (see
