Celebrate English Wine Week with Vineyards of the Surrey Hills

Due to the coronavirus pandemic organisers, WineGB, moved the event to this week (June 20th to 28th) so vineyards could better prepare and organise alternative ways to celebrate.
While some of Surrey’s vineyards are once again welcoming visitors to walk among the vines, there’s still a couple of weeks until July 4th when their tasting rooms and restaurants can re-open again.
Vineyards of the Surrey Hills (VoSH) – a collective of five of the county’s vineyards which have joined forces to promote the area’s outstanding wine – is hosting a variety of virtual tastings and special offers throughout the week.
The partnership, which comprises Albury Organic Vineyard, Chilworth Manor Vineyard, Denbies Wine Estate, Greyfriars Vineyard and High Clandon Estate, has created a special VoSH wine case, so oenophiles wanting to sample local produce can effectively tour the vineyards in the comfort of their own home.
The case includes six bottles of award-winning wines including High Clandon Halycon Cuvee 2014, Denbies Pinot Gris, Greyfriars Sparkling Rose Reserve, Chilworth Manor Rose 2019, Albury Seyval Blanc and Albury Vermouth and is available from Albury’s online shop priced at £135 per case, including free delivery.
VoSH has also teamed up with Weybridge-based John Mobbs, founder of Great British Wine, to host a special virtual live tasting on Instagram at 7pm on Friday, June 26. To take part, follow @greatbritishwine.
In the meantime here’s John’s food pairing suggestions so you can really make the most of Surrey’s home-grown wines.
- Albury Silent Pool Rosé 2019 paired with a home-baked pizza, served al-fresco in the garden during the English Wine Week heatwave. Comfort food, with a comforting, crisp, delicious local rosé. It doesn’t get much better than that!
- Greyfriars Blanc de Blancs 2014 I find pairs very well something like a buttery grilled lobster, perhaps lobster thermidor?
- High Clandon Halcyon Cuvée 2014 - a wine this elegant deserves a similarly elegant pairing. I find English sparkling pairs very well with sushi, and the High Clandon works beautifully, especially with a crispy prawn tempura maki roll!
- Chilworth Manor Rosé 2019 is delicious and crisp, with those pure summer berry flavours I love. I enjoyed this immensely with a whole rainbow trout cooked outdoors on the barbecue, served with a well-dressed tomato and herb salad.
- Denbies Pinot Gris 2018 paired with cured meat and local cheese platter. I love smoked meats and cheeses, and the richness of this wine, combined with the textured oak notes makes it very food-friendly.
