In December, Surrey Life set out to discover whether it was possible to put together a Christmas lunch using only Surrey produce. The answer was a resounding 'yes' and fortunately all of the producers run year long operations.

Denbies is Britain's largest wine estate at 265 acres. There are 12 wines in its range, several of which have won awards, and they are available in the shop, by mail order or from selected outlets.

"Apart from a very sweet dessert wine, which would be better with the pudding rather than the turkey, there are not many really bad mistakes one can make," says Denbies winemaker Marcus Sharp (right). "The traditional turkey goes well with a white or a red, and some will choose to go for fizz for all courses on such a celebration day as Christmas.

"Sparkling wines should be very well chilled, dry whites quite chilled and any still aromatic or ros wines cool but not so cold that their aromas and flavours are shut down. Reds benefit from being on the kitchen counter in the warm field of operation."

In the lead-up to Christmas, Denbies is busy handling mail and trade orders and ensuring its shop is well stocked. Marcus is also making decisions on the autumn harvest, which is well on its way to becoming wine.

As for Christmas itself, Marcus says: "My wife and I usually start the day with midnight mass. This is followed by sleep until it is time to get up for church on Christmas morning, where, as Rachel and I help with the service, we are given a glass of champagne and smoked salmon bagels to start the day."

TOP TIP: If you're considering a new wine for the big day, ask for a taster at Denbies or treat yourself to a 'preview' bottle.
