Named after the famous badges that were once awarded to top drivers and motorcycle riders at the famous Weybridge racetrack, Brooklands Gold Star, a new pale golden ale, was launched on Thursday.

A collaborative effort between Brooklands Museum and Hogs Back Brewery, which takes its inspiration from Hogs Backs established Hop Garden Gold, the 4.6% ABV ale is brewed from the finest malted barley and choicest English hops.

We are delighted to continue our association with Hogs Back Brewery a link which started when Hogs Back created a special ale for our centenary in 2007, says Allan Winn, the director of Brooklands Museum.

As a small but successful and highly professional independent brewer, Hogs Back is the perfect partner for the museum, and we are sure that our customers will agree as they sample their first chilled pint of this great new ale.

Brooklands Gold Star will be available at the museum and other selected outlets, in both bottled and draught forms.

  • Just 200 Gold Stars were awarded by the British Motorcycle Racing Club to motorcycle riders, of which just two, for Noel Pope and Eric Fernihough, were the coveted Double Gold Star awarded for lapping the bumpy Outer Circuit at an average of over 120mph during a race.

  • Even rarer were the Gold Stars awarded by the British Racing Drivers Club to car drivers:just 14 were awarded between 1930 and 1939, with two drivers, John Cobb and Oliver Bertram, winning two each.

  • The museum holds a small collection of these valuable trophies, some of which were displayed at the formal launch of Brooklands Gold Star on Thursday August 5, along with three vehicles which earned Gold Stars for their riders or drivers - the Napier-Railton, which was the fastest car ever around the Brooklands Outer Circuit; and two motorcycles, Peter Lancasters Brough Superior and a Grindlay-Peerless.
