With the national baking phenomenon that is The Great British Bake Off back on our screens, here’s a selection of Surrey bakers to give Paul Hollywood a run for his money

The Bakery, East Horsley

With their bread (and sweet and savoury treats) baked daily in East Horsley, The Bakery then delivers to its Surrey shops in Effingham, Cobham, Ripley, Burpham, Fetcham, Ashtead, Dorking, West Byfleet, Shepperton, Bookham and, indeed, East Horsley. Much enjoyment ensues.

The Bakery at Pennyhill Park, Bagshot

Okay, so this isn’t a High Street bakery, but Pennyhill Park takes its bread so seriously that their bakers can be viewed, through a viewing window, working away in The Bakery to create the day’s variety of speciality breads and patisseries. They also host master classes.

Pennyhill Park Hotel & The Spa, London Road, Bagshot, Surrey GU19 5EU. Tel: 01276 486150

Bread of Heaven, Haslemere

A Welsh anthem – and a bakery in Haslemere. Bread of Heaven is second generation Master Bakers, Nathan and Ross Kavanagh, who continue the family tradition of using only the finest and purest ingredients. As they say: “one of which - passion - simply cannot be bought.”

Bread of Heaven, 32 West Street, Haslemere, Surrey GU27 2AB. Tel: 01428 653226

Chalk Hills Bakery, South Nutfield

Baking real bread every day from an old Tractor Shed, their bread is available in many local food outlets including Priory Farm Shop and their own bakery shop in Reigate.

Chalk Hills Bakery, The Tractor Shed, Priory Farm, Sandy Lane, South Nutfield, Surrey RH1 4EJ

The Christmas Bakery, Worplesdon

Since the middle of Queen Victoria’s reign, baked wonders have wafted out of The Christmas Bakery in Worplesdon. Established in 1860 by James Christmas, it has been run by successive generations of the Christmas family ever since. These days, they offer a full-range of breads, morning goods, cakes and pastries and you’ll still find many traditional bakery lines such as their famous lardy cakes.

The Christmas Bakery, Rickford, Worplesdon, Surrey GU3 3PJ. Tel: 01483 232142

The French Tarte, Surbiton

From the owners of the award-winning restaurant, The French Table, came the wonderfully named The French Tarte - and people have been wondering how they ever got by without it since. Specialists in the kind of mouth-watering cakes, breads and pastries you’d find in the chicest districts of Paris, it’s a must visit.

The French Tarte, 83 Maple Rd, Surbiton, Surrey KT6 4AW. Tel: 0208 399 1123

Nathan’s Bakery, Claygate

A family business started nearly 30 years ago by the eponymous Nathan’s mother, he now runs the joint with his wife Lisa. Make sure to try one of their speciality breads made with local Brightwater Brewery ale.

Nathan’s Bakery, 34 The Parade, Claygate, Surrey Tel: 01372 463849

Loaf, Farnham

With two bakeries in Farnham, Loaf is blooming. Their classic range of bread is created using Cotswold-milled flour, including white, a mix of wholemeal and stoneground and the award-winning (and appealingly named) malted Dark Crunch.

Loaf, 41 Ridgeway Road, Farnham, Surrey. Tel: 01252 723279

Loaf, 22 Downing Street, Farnham, Surrey. Tel: 01252 726004
