Welcome to the latest issue of A+ Education!

Dear all,

While the summer tans may be fading and the buckets and spades put away until next time, its also an exciting new beginning with the start of the new school year.

Ive always thought there was something rather magical about the early days of the autumn term that sudden unexpected crispness in the air on the walk to school; old friendships rekindled; the sharing of summer holiday adventures; a new timetable to look forward to; homework with hot chocolate as the evenings draw in

As a child, I remember being particularly excited about the shopping trip that the return to school would invariably bring. You know the sort of thing; warm woollen tights from M&S, shiny black shoes (patent if I was lucky) from Clarks; and wonder of wonders, a new pencil case. In fact, to this day the annual pilgrimage to our local stationery shop remains one of my favourite school-associated memories.

In the latest edition of A+ Education (which youll find a link to below), we certainly have the start of the new school year very much in our minds.

For instance, in our Back to school feature, youll find loads of great ideas for those last-minute essentials from lunchboxes to satchels to colouring pencils. Meanwhile, if your son or daughter is starting uni this year, be sure to show them the inside back page, where the experts at The Good Schools Guide share some excellent tips for freshers. Plus, when it gets to the weekend, we also bring you some of the best educational days out from across the region (NB we were careful to pick places that are so much fun that they wont even realise theyre learning at the same time!).

In other highlights this issue, we also hear from BBC newsreader Nicholas Owen about the Surrey schoolteacher and grammar guru who set him on the road to journalistic stardom; meet three school choirs who have been raising the roof in their respective towns; and find out about some of the groundbreaking work going on at independent schools across the area when it comes to sharing their expertise and resources with the state sector.

Then theres all your usual favourites of course including interviews with head teachers, expert careers advice from industry leaders and The Gallery in which we showcase some of the best artwork from schools across the region.

Finally, we also have some new things for you this issue, such as 20 questions where we pin down a well-known person in the education field and put them under the A+ spotlight: for the first in the series, we meet best-selling childrens author and illustrator, Simon Basher.

Anyway, hopefully theres something there that will pique your interest, so without further ado, I will leave you to settle down with a coffee and have a read.

In the meantime, heres wishing you a great start to the autumn term with pencil cases galore and a happy and successful school year!
