Spotters find plenty of talent on Cranleigh pitch

County talent spotters have had a field day at Cranleigh Prep, with 15 pupils being selected to play hockey for Surrey.

After gaining the IAPS South Regional hockey title last term, the U13 girls went on to win the bronze medal at the IAPS National Hockey Championships.

Jess Mundy has been picked to play for the U14 Surrey squad; Olivia Barker, Matilda Hamilton, Siena Keijsers, Imogen Pilling, Boau-Lilly Shepherd and Francesca Sweet will represent the U13 squad. Year 7 pupils, Georgie Lawes and Olivia Martin, will also play in the U13 squad a year up.

The Surrey school’s boys are also looking strong. Finn Tawse has been chosen to play for the Surrey U14s with fellow Year 8 boys Sean Hope, Tom Nicholas and Will Petter, plus Freddie Fewings and Josh Taylor from Year 7 included in the county U13 squad.

Pupil proves he is a good sport in 21km run

A Reigate St Mary’s pupil may be too young to be very serious about sport but he’s already using the power of his legs to good effect.

The year 2 pupil found out his friends’ cousin was suffering with cystic fibrosis and wanted to help so he pledged to run 21km over the course of six weekends. He raised £340.

Headmaster Marcus Culverwell said: “The most impressive thing is that he is still only six years old. If he can run that far and show that much care in Year 2 what is he going to be like by the time he gets to Year 6. It really delights me when children show compassion for others.”

Bringing home the gold

Downsend School pupils came home with two titles and a team bronze medal from the Surrey Schools’ Biathlon.

More than 30 pupils from the Leatherhead school took to the track and pool, competing against 400 competitors from other Surrey schools.

Joe Mumford was crowned individual champion of his U11 age group for the second year running and was also part of the winning boys’ team. The U11 girls won bronze.

Marie Seivewright, Head of Girls’ Games, said: “I am always inspired by the effort that emanates from each and every Downsend representative and the way they cheer each other on for the collective good of the school and the team.”

The British Schools Finals are at Crystal Palace in March.

Strong opponents beaten for U13’s football glory

One of Hoe Bridge School’s most successful football teams in the schools’ history have now been crowned Surrey Champions.

The Woking school’s 1st XI faced fearsome opponents Danes Hill in the final of the U13 Surrey Prep Schools Football Cup.

Hoe Bridge took the lead after 12 minutes and from then on controlled the game before eventually winning and taking the county title.

The win was a boost after a great term of football in which they won every match they played, beating Shrewsbury House, Rokeby and Danes Hill in the cup. Across the term they scored 100 goals.
