Priory Preparatory School is a leading independent day school for boys in Surrey. The school, for boys aged 2-13, combines the warmth and sense of community of a small school (200 boys in total) with the resources, ambition and achievements of a leading preparatory school.
Learning at Priory Preparatory School
Priory Prep’s high academic standards are achieved through small classes, outstanding subject specialist teaching, and a firm belief that happy boys learn. Small class sizes ensure that each boy’s education can be tailored to their individual needs. Parents frequently comment that the teachers are able to inspire and motivate their boys to fulfil their potential and this underpins their numerous achievements.
We recognise that boys develop and learn in different ways and at a different pace from girls. Headmaster, Graham Malcolm, explains “A boy based curriculum needs to provide space for them to investigate and explore, to enable them to discover and experience their learning in a practical manner. We encourage boys to throw themselves into learning, whether that be playing an instrument, in competition on the sports field or discovering the pleasure of being immersed in a powerful narrative story. I can vouch for this as I witness this in the learning environment of the school daily.”
The curriculum is deliberately broad: drama, music, French and swimming, for example, are all taught by specialist teachers from Reception upwards. There are also numerous school trips and sporting tours – all designed to encourage independence, camaraderie and an appreciation of the wider world.
The extra-curricular programme at Priory Prep is extensive and constantly reviewed to meet the interests of our boys. It is designed both to broaden horizons and to make sure that the boys can unwind and have fun. We extol the benefits of ‘having a go’ and this results in a ‘can do’ attitude amongst the boys.
Moving on to senior school
Priory Prep prepares the boys for entry to a wide range of senior schools with guidance and support provided to parents regarding the best school for their son.
All boys go on to their secondary school of choice – many achieve grammar school places and many also win scholarships to their future schools.
Leavers’ destinations include: King’s College Wimbledon, Epsom College, St John’s School, Whitgift, Sutton Grammar, Worth, Caterham, Reigate Grammar School: Purcell School of Music.
Scholarships and Bursaries
The introduction of scholarships and bursaries from Year 3 is designed to recognise the high academic standards achieved at Priory Prep. The school has an enviable reputation for academic success coupled with pastoral care, as evidenced by the number of scholarships and awards made to Priory boys moving on to top secondary schools. The Chair of Governors, explains, “We are committed to offering boys a first class education and these awards will enable us to reach pupils who would not otherwise be able to come to Priory Prep.”
ISI Inspection Reports
The school is consistently awarded ‘Outstanding’ in all areas by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. The recent report in 2014 highlighted the following:
“The setting makes outstanding provision in meeting the needs of the children who attend. The educational programme, enhanced by specialist teaching in music, covers both the prime and specific areas of learning and has breadth and depth.”
Lessons “reflect individual children’s interests and learning needs and enable them to develop as independent learners.”
Priory boys are “demonstrably happy…enthusiastic and keen to engage with their learning…respectful and well mannered.”
