Cranmore School is one of Surreys leading independent boys prep schools. And with rising numbers (a third class has just been opened to accommodate demand for 2012 Reception places) it is one of Surreys most successful schools. The co-ed Nursery (Bright Stars at Cranmore) takes children from 2 onwards in purpose- built separate accommodation and the school then takes boys only from four to 13 years.

Devoted to single-sex education, Cranmores catholic-ethos philosophy and teaching is geared towards the way boys think, learn and develop. Structured and thought-provoking teaching is liberally interspersed with opportunities to let off steam and allow an outlet for the boys natural exuberance. Headmaster Michael Connolly cites his ideal pupil as curious, conscientious, and considerate and children are encouraged to be thoughtful of others and develop an attitude open to new avenues and activities. Strong pastoral care, provided through the form teachers, year group co-ordinators, House system and Reception team gives boys the support and encouragement needed in order to flourish.

Academic strength is undisputed but Cranmore also gives boys a wealth of opportunities in many other ways. The 24-acre site is home to numerous sports facilities including a swimming pool, astro-turf and grass pitches, a sports hall and gym, squash courts, cricket nets and tennis courts. The sport-for-all philosophy allows 26 sports from mainstream football, rugby and cricket to skiing, rowing, judo and fencing. The appointment of Barry Everitt (ex-Ireland A, London Irish and Northampton rugby player) as Director of Sport has allowed the schools sporting tradition to flourish. Recent awards include gold in the National School Ski Finals and a triumph at the Nationals for the under-9 rugby team.

The creative arts are given the time and facilities to encourage boys to develop other skills and interests. Purpose-built music rooms and an auditorium plus a wide range of instrumental lessons mean that pupils can enjoy opportunities from orchestras to choirs to learning the clarinet. Indeed, the singing is of such quality that the boys were awarded outstanding at the recent Woking Festival. A trip to Paris last autumn saw the Cranmore choir sing at Disneyland and at the Basilica of St. Clotilde. The majority of boys learn one if not two instruments and there are different orchestras to allow them their moment in front of an audience.

The depth of the academic education encourages boys to fulfil their potential and stretch themselves from a firm educational footing. As well as mainstream subjects, the pupils horizons are broadened with lessons in subjects such as Latin and Philosophy. Cranmores boys go on to attend a range of senior schools with a goodly number going to nearby Guildfords Royal Grammar School. Other senior schools include City of London Freemens; Kings College School, Wimbledon; Wellington; Tonbridge; Charterhouse; Epsom College; , St John's, Leatherhead and St George's, Weybridge. Over 150 scholarships have been won in recent years and the school has an excellent record in placing boys in the school of the familys choosing.

Visiting Cranmore is the best way to understand everything that the school has to offer and families are welcome to the termly Open Mornings (next dates are Friday 2 and Saturday 3 March 2012). In addition, the Registrar, Helen Perry, will make individual appointments to fit with schedules. The school welcomes prospective families so please call on 01483 280340 or email admissions@cranmoreprep.co.uk
