The world is changing more rapidly than ever before and in almost every respect. At Caterham School we recognise that we need to prepare students for jobs that don’t exist yet, using technologies that haven’t been invented to solve problems that we don’t even know are problems.

If education focuses simply on the passing on of knowledge and the examination of that knowledge, we would do our students a grave disservice. What we must do is nurture a skill set which holds our students in good stead for a future which none of us can predict.
At Caterham School “an education for life” means that we aim to equip every student with the tools that will hold them in good stead for a happy and successful future.
Part of that preparation starts with a recognition of the obvious; everyone is different and therefore each person’s learning style is bound to be unique too. Caterham School recognises the need for each pupil to understand how they learn best and how to think independently and creatively. Consequently the School has introduced initiatives that are not subject-specific, but can be applied across all areas of learning.
Caterham use multiple intelligence testing to identify a student’s preferred learning style. A study skills programme has been introduced, in which students cover areas such as lateral thinking and courses are introduced on memorising, note-taking, speed reading and exam technique.
Another successful innovation is the study buddy scheme in which Sixth Form students volunteer to help younger students, for example by having foreign language conversations.
Overall, the School aims to focus on developing the whole person, seeking to ensure that each pupil will be ready for the challenges of life at university and beyond. There is recognition that in order to flourish in the modern world pupils need transferable skills. Therefore the extensive co-curricular programme plays an important role in nurturing a skill set which holds the students in good stead for a future which none of us can predict.
This approach has a positive impact on examination results: the School is one of the top independent co-educational schools in England and is also in the top one per cent of ‘value added’. All the students progress to university with over 85% going to one in the UK’s ‘top tier’.
