Barfield offers an excellent academic education without compromising diversity in the educational curriculum. Pupils are prepared for Common Entrance at 11+ and 13+, scholarship and grammar school entry, and achieve outstanding results with 100% success rate to their choice of secondary school.

Children can join Barfields newly refurbished Nursery from 2 years. They thrive in this happy, stimulating atmosphere, engaged in play-based learning whilst benefiting from the more extensive facilities of a prep-school. They are able to use the indoor pool all year round and eat in the main school dining room. All meals are freshly prepared with ingredients sourced from local suppliers and (in the summer months) from the school garden.

The Nursery and Reception Children are keen helpers in the Barfield Chicken coop. They gather the eggs and use them in the school cook house. The reception children use the eggs to learn about counting, data handling, not to mention, egg handling.

All year groups make full use of the extensive grounds and woodland with Forest Schools. The children go to a specially designed area in the woods, sit round a log circle and learn about nature, the environment and often re-enforce class based activities within the context of the great outdoors.

Barfield is known for its excellence in music. All the children from the youngest Owlets (two to three-year-olds) to those in Year 8 are given high-quality specialist class music tuition.A whole-school music policy ensures continuity of learning from Foundation stage through to Key Stage 3.The pupils are taught broadly according to Kodaly and Dalcroze principles. Barfield has several choirs, an orchestra and many children set up their own bands.

Barfield pupils enjoy a wealth of sports on offer at Barfield. An indoor swimming pool on site ensures many of our pupils are extremely competent swimmers and we have a successful swimming team who compete in national trials. We also play rugby, football, hockey, netball, aero-ball, gym and dance.

In addition to this, Barfields outdoor adventure pursuits company Three Peaks adventure facilities which include 4x4 driving, high and low ropes courses, camping, zip wire and quad biking. This challenges the children physically and mentally and engenders courage and resilience.

The younger years must be a time of testing the water and learning about all areas of life, whether academic, creative or sporting, says headmaster, Robin Davies. They should all be happily challenged in a cheerful and upbeat environment, whether it is in their ABCs or 123s, their artistic or performing talents or their endeavours in sports and outdoor pursuits.

Older children at Barfield experience a rigorous academic education. As they move through the school the work becomes more challenging and thought is put in to what school is right for you child. Barfield have an experienced and committed staff body with an excellent knowledge of secondary schools suitable for each individual child.

Barfield is able to supplement the curriculum with global and environmental education with regular A.C.E days (Awareness, Commitment and Empowerment). Each day is themed to cover various modern day issues such as pollution, global warming, recycling and energy. Each year group tackles a different aspect of each issue. These offer hands on, practical education days, held outside and in the community and are very valuable lessons for todays child.
