The start of the new academic year saw Mr Shaun Fenton take over as Headmaster of Reigate Grammar School. Mr Fenton moved to RGS from Pate’s Grammar School, Cheltenham a school which, under Mr Fenton’s leadership, was named Sunday Times School of the Year 2011/12. Mr Fenton’s pledge is to retain Reigate Grammar School’s family ethos and ensure a child-focused school where each and every girl and boy can excel and relish their school years.
Fast forward six months from Mr Fenton’s joining and staff and students are celebrating a phenomenal run of success which includes: a further rise in A Level and GCSE results; a record number of Oxbridge offers; semi-finalists in the Daily Mail Rugby competition; South of England Hockey finalists and a triple win for girls hockey in the U12, U14 and U18s district competitions; U14 Sevens Rugby squad won the Schools Championship; the highest number of students achieving the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award nationally; sell-out shows of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale and Daisy Pulls It Off; four students selected for the undergraduate level National Student Drama Festival following a performance of their self-devised Leveson Enquiry inspired play Bonkers; RGS’ senior maths team beat over 40 schools to win the Surrey Schools Maths Challenge; over 130 Reigate Grammar School students passed ABRSM music grade exams with one in every five at distinction level and the many orchestras, bands and choirs of RGS welcomed a packed audience to Dorking Halls for the highlight of the school’s annual concert programme.
Exciting improvements are also underway in the school’s curriculum with a three-year GCSE course beginning in September 2013. The extended GCSE course will allow increased time for students to study their subjects in-depth and will run alongside an ‘electives’ course enabling students to explore additional subject areas for their personal fulfilment and enjoyment rather than just for examination.
A happy, caring atmosphere and students who enjoy all aspects of school life remain defining characteristics of Reigate Grammar School. See the school in action at monthly open mornings or enjoy one of the many concerts, drama performances or Thanks Science It’s Friday presentations that take place throughout the school year.
