Surrey care home to go the extra mile this Christmas

PUBLISHED: 15:10 27 November 2017

The festive season is a time of celebration and community, and at this Surrey care home, they really go the extra mile to make sure their residents enjoy this special time of year

Family values lay at Birtley House’s very core, which is reinforced by the fact that it is and always has been a family owned and managed care home since it first opened its doors over 85 years ago.

In keeping with our family ethos and Christmas tradition we plan to make this festive season a fun, culinary and celebratory affair. Not just celebratory in the typical Christmas sense, but also through the residents’ wide network of family members joining them from Christmas Eve through to Boxing Day.

As is always the case, we will have our 17ft tall Christmas tree in place well in advance of Christmas Day, under which will be presents for all of our residents.

The Blackheath Choral Society pay us a visit on 18 December to regale our residents and their family members with evening carols, all whilst enjoying a mince pie or two and savouring mulled wine - a longstanding tradition in Birtley House.

On Christmas Eve our family will then prepare for the big day. We transform the drawing room into a picturesque setting for handing out presents to all our residents on Christmas morning, before we all sit down to a long and joyful Christmas lunch with many of our residents’ family members present.

Of course, it doesn’t stop there. Boxing Day is yet another opportunity to welcome residents’ families, some of whom won’t be able to make Christmas Day, to savour the Christmas spirit and appreciate what is undoubtedly the most important aspect of the festive season: time spent with loved ones.
