The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge opened the Royal Marsden Hospital's new specialist children's cancer treatment ward, the Oak Centre

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge opened the Royal Marsden Hospitals new specialist children's cancer treatment ward, the Oak Centre, on Thursday September 29.

Prince William, who became the hospitals patron in 2007 having undertaken work experience there in 2005, officially opened the centre before he and the Duchess met patients, hospital staff and key donors and fundraisers.

William arrived straightfrom a 24-hour shift on duty, in which he had flowna sailor from the Isle of Man to Sandhurst to see a seriously-ill relative and helped pick up a casualty with serious head injuries in the Lake District.

After waving to the crowds, the Duke and Duchess met Royal Marsden's chief executive, Cally Palmer, who was invited to the royalcouple's wedding at Westminster Abbey in April, and chairman, Ian Molson.

The Oak Centre is one of the largest comprehensive children's cancer centres in Europe and is expected to see almost 600 inpatients and more than 5,000 day patients every year.

The 18m cost of building it was raised by the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and Teenage Cancer Trust.
