As well as starring in ITV1's new hit series, Demons, Philip Glenister is also a patron of Surrey-based charity Momentum and is a leading light in the charity's celebrity golf day
Phil is a keen golfer, playing off a useful 12 handicap, and he puts his love of the game to work by helping the Surrey-based charity Momentum, which supports children with cancer and other life-threatening conditions.
Since becoming a patron, Phil has been a leading light in the charity's celebrity golf day, luring other members of the Stage Golfing Society to play at Richmond Golf Club.
Momentum has focused on improving the facilities in the isolation rooms on the Dolphin Ward in Kingston Hospital, where children suffering from cancer and their parents will spend many days.
The charity, which celebrates its fifth anniversary in May, was started by Bianca Effemey, who was working in the paediatric department at Kingston Hospital. She met two parents, Jacqueline Coppellotti and Alison Trigg, whose son and daughter respectively had recently been diagnosed with different forms of cancer. The three of them decided to set up a much-needed support group for families in a similar situation and that became Momentum.
Phil first got involved when a golfing friend asked if he would visit a neighbour's daughter, who was in hospital being treated for leukaemia. "I was more than happy to oblige," he says. "Then I was asked to become a patron, which I was happy to do. With the golf day, it means I'm helping create awareness about Momentum as well as doing something I enjoy and giving something back."
- Momentum's next celebrity golf day is at Richmond Golf Club on Friday June 19. For details, see www.moment-um.org. If you need Momentum's help or want to offer your support, call 07855 490545 or e-mail email@example.com
