As winter unfurls, we are delighted to announce that the winner of our annual photography competition is this stunning shot of a Surrey lavender farm in summer.

Taking pride of place on the cover of our 2016 calendar, it captures perfectly our ‘Icons of Surrey’ theme – with the county’s historic lavender industry enjoying such a renaissance in recent years.

Taken by Kelvin Trundle, who wins a bundle of great prizes, the winning shot appears alongside 11 further pictures from readers.

From a frozen Frensham Little Pond to the green and pleasant land of Brockham, this year’s selection depicts a range of iconic local views, but it was the photo of Banstead’s Mayfield Lavender that captured the Surrey Life team’s imagination.

“It’s never easy picking an overall winner in our annual photography competition, and this year we received a record-breaking number of entries,” says assistant editor Matthew Williams.

“While any of the photos featured could conceivably have taken the honours, and we did chop and change a little in our decision-making, we kept returning to Kelvin’s shot – and decided it would make for a vibrant introduction to this year’s calendar.”

All 12 of this year’s calendar images, as well as all our shortlisted photos from Surrey Life readers, were displayed at Denbies Wine Estate in Dorking from Monday January 18 to Sunday January 24.

Kelvin wins a stash of great prizes including...

• An annual pass to the British Wildlife Centre in Lingfield

• A family ticket for The Supercar Event 2016 at Dunsfold Park

• A photography book on Richmond Park by Alex Saberi

• A £50 voucher to use on photography equipment

• A pair of tickets to The Sculpture Park at Churt

• A case of Hogstar English Lager from Hogs Back Brewery

• A family ticket to Painshill Park in Cobham

• A pair of tickets to a photography day at RHS Garden Wisley
