The vegetarian and vegan offering in Surrey seems to be improving by the week. Here are nine of the best restaurants and cafés for vegetarians and vegans in Surrey
Despite being much talked about, The Beano remains something of a hidden gem even for many people who live and work in Guildford. Only opening at lunchtimes at The Guildford Institute, the food is nothing short of veggie heaven. Click here for the full review.
The Bronte’s ‘breakfast bowl’ has become an Instagram sensation – handily, it’s also a super healthy way to start the day, with coconut yogurt, fresh berries, gluten-free granola and honey. Delicious. They also serve up a range of artisan organic coffees.
A place that makes people feel at home, they aim for a balance between healthy and shameless indulgence. Works for us! Probably best known for their falafel pitas, veg comes from Covent Garden (or is home grown whenever they can get it!).
A fully vegan café with a classically trained head chef, they explore classic flavours with vegan ingredients. With their ‘sausage’ wellington emerging as a signature dish (it’s created from beans), their foodie appeal isn’t limited to those who have chosen the lifestyle. All their veg comes from Layton’s greengrocer in Bookham.
Originally a result of research into juicing and cleansing, The Juice Smith is yet another Instagram sensation (it must be a Cobham thing – or maybe just healthy eating pride?!). If you’re looking for an all-day matcha latte, a chai spiced pudding with berry compote or açaí bowl, then they’ve got the bases covered.
Found within touching distance of the Clock Tower, Organico is a health food shop with a difference. While you can pick up plenty of fresh produce and vegan cheeses, you can also relax in their café area.
Established way back in 1989, Riverside Vegetaria is found in a beautiful riverside location. As the name would suggest, they’ve long prided themselves on serving a high-quality vegetarian offering. They practice an “eat local, buy local and be local” community policy.
Nestled in the arch beneath Richmond Bridge, you’ll find a quirky little café focussed on great coffee, great music and great food. They’re also 100% vegetarian, with beautiful Popina tarts, vegetable lasagnes, bean chilli etc. The equally splendid Hollyhock Café in the nearby Terrace Gardens is run by the same folk.
Waters Edge, Horsell
From freshly made American pancakes with Horsell honey to superfood salads (kale, broccoli, quinoa, pea and mint is a favourite), Waters Edge take a farm to table approach. They can dig their own veg and pick their own kitchen garden herbs, and have it at the table in an hour.
