“As a village coffee shop, we depend completely on regular customers,” says owner Robin Johnston. “Our reputation is our lifeblood. With that in mind, you can imagine how we felt when we heard we had been nominated by our customers and Surrey Life readers as one of the best three coffee houses in the county. Quaich was built on our passion for our community, and we are both thrilled and encouraged to know that it’s that community who have taken the time to put pen to paper to call out our name. “We’re incredibly excited and proud to have been nominated by the public for the Surrey Life Food & Drink Awards 2014,” says chief executive Christopher Moore. “The Clink at HMP High Down opened in 2009 and is part of an incredibly successful rehabilitation programme for prisoners, reducing reoffending rates by over 70% to date. I believe people voted for us because they can see the positive impact our restaurants have on those undergoing rehabilitation and the wider community, plus the quality and value of our menus really are exceptional.”

“We’re part of a real family-feel business,” says general manager Katie Dallyn. “It’s fantastic to be nominated as a finalist for this award, as it means that we are including our customers. As well as excellent training, we ensure that every team member’s personality is allowed to shine. We get on well with each other, enjoy special occasions together, and keep that spirit alive. “Receiving the phone call to be told we’d been shortlisted for this award made our day,” say owners Marc and Joelle Cullender. “At Cullenders, we strive to give our customers the personal service that gets lost on a busy high street. As a local family, we make a real effort to get to know our customers and we have built up a loyal following. Our first corner shop has evolved into a 40-cover delicatessen and kitchen with an evening wine bar offering. We’ve created a unique place for our customers to not only buy their cheeses and deli items but sit and enjoy a coffee or a cheeseboard with a glass of wine at the same time.”

“Having won this award last year with Kristy, it’s a real honour to have again been recognised by our customers,” says Fernando. “We are always hunting down new flavours (to the extent that we regularly forage for ingredients in the woods near the restaurant) and cooking techniques, as well as thinking of better ways to present our dishes. I truly love what I do and really hope that passion comes across in every plate of food that is sent out of our kitchen. We have an amazing team here and all aim to achieve the highest standards.”

“I’m originally from Essex, but Surrey is my adopted county,” says Steve. “We love Ripley and Drake’s is very much part of the community – even more so since we bought a pub in the village! I love being creative with the fantastic produce that each different season brings us. Our customers eagerly await new menus being introduced and seeing the way favourite dishes evolve from year to year – certain elements remain but I will have tweaked them. And there are always some totally new flavour discoveries to be made!”

“I am very honoured to be a finalist,” says Jon. “My team and I spend a large percentage of our lives sourcing ingredients and preparing them to the best of our abilities. We look for new ways to combine traditional cooking methods with modern techniques to complement our informal style of modern bistro. It is therefore a great encouragement to us that so many of our customers hold us in high regard and have taken time to vote. I would also like to thank all the loyal staff for constantly making me look good.”

“Making it to the finals feels all the more special because this is down to a public vote, which means so much,” says Jon Briscoe, who runs the pub with wife Paula. “The Jolly Farmers is independently owned – something of a rarity these days – and is very much part of the Surrey community; for instance, we go out of our way to support local producers and smaller independents. Being a finalist shows recognition for our team, suppliers and customers, who all play a vital role in the success of our business. “We believe wholeheartedly in the importance of using locally sourced, fresh produce wherever possible, not only because we want to ensure the food we serve is of the best quality, but because it ensures our prisoners in training learn how to create each and every dish from raw ingredients,” says chief executive Christopher Moore. “We cultivate, grow and harvest fruit, vegetables and herbs, both at The Clink at HMP High Down in Sutton and The Clink at HMP Send, and our prisoners can train towards gaining NVQ qualifications in horticulture, agriculture and farming. “We’re delighted to have been recognised like this so soon after opening,” says owner Reza Amini. “We always aimed to stand out from the crowd and that’s why we made Henry’s Kitchen an eco-friendly restaurant. This means that not only do we use local ingredients, but we have also included sustainable features in the restaurant, such as using rainwater to flush the lavatories, interior walls made from reclaimed timber from Farnham and menus printed on recycled paper.
